84-L>nca»ttf Farming, Saturday, March 12, 1988 Skating To The Top (Continued from Pag* B 2) has helped give her an edge on competition. “I’m lucky,” Carol said, “I have a good pro. I hit that by luck because when I started out I just wanted to learn to skate, not com pete. But I’ve been with the same pro ever since.” Despite the speed and the skill that Carol demonstrates at the rink, she has never been seriously hurt by a fall. “I had a broken finger, but nothing that kept me from skating.” Not only has skating changed Carol’s life by giving her a feeling of accomplishment and encour agement but it also has developed her sewing skill since she always designs and sews her own outfits. Carol credits her mother with hav ing taught her sewing. Carol’s per fectionist tendancies are not lim ited to skating but also her sewing techniques. On one outfit, Carol spent 34 hours handstitching yards of sequins that later needed to be replaced with other trim since they did not show up from a distance. Currently, Carol is branching out into sewing skating outfits for others. For anyone contemplating entering skating competition, Car ol advises, “Just go out there and be yourself. Although it’s easier to start when you’re young, it’s not impossible at any age.” Carol ought to know. Look what she’s accomplished.
