Bcrgland was elected to the U.S.
House of Representatives from his
home state of Minnesota in 1970,
and was re-elected in 1972, 1974,
and 1976. After election to a fourth
House term, he was asked to serve
as President Jimmy Carter’s Sec
retary of Agriculture, the first
farmer to hold that post since 1940.
From 1981 to 1984 Bergland
was president of Farmland World
Trade, a subsidiary of Farmland
Industries, the nation’s largest
farmer cooperative, headquartered
in Kansas City, Missouri.
As chief executive office of the
NRECA, Bcrgland holds dual
responsibilities as executive vice
president to the NRECA board of
directors and general manager of
the association’s staff.
