CAMP HILL Should Pen
nsylvania dairy fanners set their
own milk prices?
“We must,” said Roy Romber
ger, an official with Regional
Cooperative Marketing Agency, in
announcing meetings on over
order pricing next week in Berks,
Lebanon, Lancaster and Chester
counties.
RCMA’s director of market
relations sees time running out on
Pennsylvania dairymen.
“Just how long can we wait for
USDA or dealers to take action on
plummeting milk prices?” he
asked.
We can blame cuts in support
prices, Romberger points out. And
we can waste a lot of time wonder

Dairy Meetings Called To Boost Milk Checks
Minnesota and Wisconsin has to
do with Class I prices in Pennsyl
vania, he said.
Neither makes much sense to
Romberger. Not for Northeast
dairymen of handlers faced with a
milk shortage. Not when 70-cow
dairymen in Pennsylvania will see
milk checks shrink by $8,300 in
1988.
But the RCMA official says he
does have an answer—over order
pricing. RCMA has set a fair mark
et price of $14.45. And have asked
dealers and handlers to meet it.

Such over order pricing will be
among the major topics on the

said.
It’s not a new idea, either.
According to Romberger, dairy
farmers in 30 major U.S. markets
now receive such premiums.

“It’s farmers working together

emphasizes. “It works.”
“In the Chicago federal order in
