ENTER THE DAIRY OF DISTINCTION PROGRAM NOW! Beautiful Farmsteads... The Northeast is rightfully proud of its dairy industry. Agriculture is our number one industry, with milk its major commodity. Realizing dairying’s importance to the area’s eco nomy, the Northeast Dairy Farm Beautification Program (NEDFBP) was incorporated November 1983 to honor attractive dairy farms with the Dairy of Distinction Award. The award program is based on the concept that these attractive farmsteads will enhance consumer confidence in the wholesomeness of milk, stimulate milk sales and encourage public support for the industry. The NEDFBP has divided the Northeast into regions, with approximately the same num ber of farms per district. Each district is under the jurisdiction of a local committee responsi ble for organizing the judging, awarding the Dairy of Distinction signs and publicity. The program also operates on the regional level through the NEDFBP Board of Directors, which ovesee and provide support and guidance to the local communities. All active dairy farms within the region covered by the program are eligible to apply for a Dairy of Distinc tion award. Applications, available from the program’s area secretary, the local commit tees and other sources such as agricultural publications, must be submitted by April 15 of each year. Farm judging takes place in the month of May and is based on the roadside appearance of buildings, grounds and surroundings. This year in the Pennsylvania Program in addition to the district team of judges that does the roadside inspection, the sanitarian for your cooperative or dealer-handler will be asked to be part of the judging process. Winning farms receive a colorful, aluminum 18x24 inch Dairy of Distinction sign to be placed on the farmstead near the roadside so passers-by can recognize the farm as a Dairy of Distinction.
