LEMASTERS 1987 was an
excellent business year for Atlan
tic Breeders Cooperative, the orga
nization’s District 8 Director,
Dwight Hawbaker of Greencastle,
reported to members at the twenty
fourth annual District Meeting
held February 17 at Lemaster
Community Center. He said that
Atlantic members supported their
cooperative through growth in
Technician services, increased
unit sales and greater use of sires
that transmit the highest genetics
for herd improvement.
Mr. Hawbaker pointed out that
Atlantic’s benefits from being a
partner in Federated Genetics
include a wider selection of sires
for members to use and income
from semen sales in nonmember
markets. He also reported that the
cooperative’s bylaws were revised
to add areas being served to exist
ing Districts and provide member-

system. Because quackgrass grows mainly from
these roots and not its seeds, Ranger can give
you long-lasting control. And because Ranger
does not build up in the soil it won't cause you
carryover problems later like atrazme.
Use Ranger on quackgrass,
and cut back atrazine
When you get control of your quackgrass prob
lem with Ranger you can reduce atrazme to
much lower rates for use on many other weeds.

A narrated slide presentation by
management representative Gary
Heckman of Lancaster reviewed
basic principles of cattle breeding
and portrayed the strong genetic
traits being transmitted by current
sires. He pointed out that genetic
levels have increased on proven
sires while average semen costs
are lower than one year ago. Mr.
Heckman encouraged members to
select sires primarily for produc
tion and to use Atlantic’s mating
program options which best fit
their herd improvement needs.
During the meeting, ten area
dairymen were honored for having
high producing herds this past
year. Receiving certificates of
merit for their high Dairy Herd
