The Sulbra DHIA completed its 64th year of testing September 30, 1987. The 19 herds on official test ing averaged 16,830 pounds of milk, 687 pounds of butterfat at 3.61 % test, and 544 pounds of pro tein. In 1987 1127 cows were on test in the Sulbra Dairy Herd Improvement Association. An additional four herds were on own er sampler testing throughout the year. Over the 64 years of testing herds have decreased while num bers of cows per herd have increased. During 1920-29, 245 cows were tested producing 7220 pounds of milk and 269 pounds of butterfat per cow. In the 1970’s the number of cows tested was 1075 averaging 13,626 pounds of milk, and 470 pounds of butterfat. In 1986 1201 cows were on test pro ducing an average of 15,240 pounds of milk, 558 pounds of fat, and 487 pounds of protein. In 1987 the county ranked 21st in milk production and lied for 23rd in protein. The Sullivan County herds averaged 245 pound s more milk than state average, were .02% under state average in butterfat and 19 pounds higher in protein than state average. The lac tation period for county cows aver aged 312 dayus as compared to slate average of 315 days. Bulls used in the herds had pre dicted differences of 68 and as a result the average predicted differ ences for milk was +279 pounds, +ll pounds fat and increased milk value of '+s33. Statewide this was +199 for milk and +s23 for milk value. Somatic cell counts for the herds averaged 330,000.
