Ten-Year-Old Wins Jr. Beef Show
HARRISBURG Ten-year
old Joshua Cowell of Greene
County showed his first steer at a
Pennsylvania Farm Show and
walked away with grand champion
honors in junior beef steer judging
in the Large Arena. Joshua is one
of the youngest exhibitors ever to
win the top title.
Cowell says he has been show
ing steers for only two years and
the 72nd Pennsylvania State Farm
Show is his first. The happy young
boy from Waynesburg weighs
only 70 pounds and he had no diffi
culty leading his 1,280-pound
black Angus-Chianina, “Coal,”
around the Large Arena to delight
spectators and photographers. The
steer weighs 18 times more than
the 10-year-old, but that difference
didn’t matter to the boy or steer.
“He’s pretty tame,” said CoweljL
Asked what he would do with
the money from Friday’s sche
duled auction of his steer, Cowell
said, “I’ll put it in a savings
account for college.”
The confident young winner
said he intends to go to college to
become a veterinarian. “But,” he
added, “I’ll keep some cattle too.”
Seventeen-year-old Mike Mes
sick of Middletown, Dauphin
County, came close to making it
three in a row. Messick’s steer,
“Alex,” was Reserve Grand
Champ. Messick was last year’s
top exhibitor, in fact he showed the
Grand Champion Baby Beef for
the last two years, winning the title
in 1987 and 1986. The Dauphin
County boy said he was not disap
pointed with second place this year
and indicated he was already look
ing forward to next year’s compet
ition, “I’ll be back again to try
again,” he said?
