Dr. Jerry H. Reybum, professor of 4-H youth at Penn State, has been named director of the nation al study. 4-H is the youth compo nent of USDA Cooperative Extension. “College enrollment in the sci ences, especially agricultural sci ence, has declined nation-wide,” says Dr. Reybum. “Our science and evaluation study will examine a number of 4-H projects to find patterns of support that encourage scientific inquiry at an early age. We are also looking at factors that encourage 4-H members to con tinue their interest in science into college,” he says. The USDA study will be begin at the National 4-H Congress in Chicago in December, where state-wide winners of 4-H project categories compete for national honors. “4-H’ers at National Con gress have been successful with 4-H and will be an excellent study group. They will participate by completing a questionnaire designed to bring out 4-H program characteristics that lead members to study agricultural sciences in REVOLUTIONARY Com Burning Stove Heat Your House With America’s Cheapest Energy Source SUMMIT MACHINERY Leroy M. In addi tion to 4-H members, high school math and science teachers and counselors in Pennsylvania will be asked to participate in the study. Dr. Allan Smith of National 4-H and Trent Schriefer, a Penn State graduate student in agricultural and extension education, are deve loping the questionnaire. Penn State’s study, entitled “Identifying instructional Strate gies Most Effective in Recruiting Scientific Human Capital for Agri culture” began September 1, and is expected to last for 13 months. It is part of a national study. Wyoming, Missouri and North Carolina are also evaluating their 4-H state programs and Florida is building on its 4-H projects so that 4-H’ers can receive college credit for some of their work. “The USDA grant gives Penn State 4-H an opportunity to evalu ate and redirect some of our 4-H programming,” says Reybum. “4-H can be a positive influence in urban as well as rural areas and we want to identify and support those programs that lead members to continue their study of agricultural sciences into College.” Authorized Dealers ELI PEACHY Star Rd.
