DuPont Reveals Postemergence
Grass Herbicide For Corn
WILMINGTON. DE—A major
research effort by the Du Pont
Company’s Agricultural Products
Department has produced an
experimental postemergence grass
herbicide with com tolerance.
The low-dose herbicide, DPX-
V 9360, is derived from the com
pany’s sulfonylurea family of
chemicals. “Our biologists and
chemists looked at what corn
growers needed most - post
emergence grass control - and
designed a compound to do the
job.” says Rick Harr, product
specialist.
The experimental herbicide will
be marketed as a postemergence
treatment for perennial and annual
grasses, as well as some annual
broadleaf species. Following a
two-year evaluation in com grow
ing regions by Du Pont, it will be
available for cooperative testing in
1988 by university researchers,
many of whom attended a meeting
at the company’s headquarters- in
Wilmington, Del., .where the
announcement of the'new wesd
control product w£s made.

postemergence grass control for
com that researchers have been
trying to develop for years.” Harr
says. “Efficacy studies prove it to
be tremendously successful in con
trolling problem grasses such as
shattercane, foxtails, fall panicum,
johnsongrass and quackgrass.”
Among the broadleaf weeds con
trolled, redroot pigweed is one of
the more sensitive.
The sulfonylurea chemistry is
distinguished by low use rates and
a unique mode of action: It stops
weeds from growing by blocking
enzyme production necessary for
cell division.
At a rate of only one-quarter
ounce to 1-ounce per acre,
DPX-V9360 controls a broad

raise or lower each coulter indivi
dually, and each is spring loaded to
prevent damage from field rocks.
The standard Category II hitch
allows the Coulter Caddy to fit
most 3-Point drills available today.

spectrum of grasses, according to
Frank DeGcnnaro, a Du Pont
research group leader. “The pro
duct performs at maximum poten
tial when applied with 10 to 30 gal
lons of carrier per acre to actively
growing weeds in tlje three-to
seven leaf stage.” He adds that a
non-ionic surfactant - such as X-77
or crop oil concentrate - signifi
cantly increases efficacy.
“This new chemistry will fit in
nearly all segments of the com
market and offers growers a wide
window of application,” says Harr.
“With this new development and
the many others to come, our
objective is continuing advance-
ment in chemical technology while
addressing the needs of our corn
belt customers.”
