YORK SPRINGS “4-H For
Youth For America” was the
theme of the Adams County Lead
ers Banquet held recently at the
York Springs Fireball. The event is
held annually and this year recog
nized 195 volunteer leaders who
work with over 500 4-H youth in
Adams County.
Keeping with the theme of the
evening, the guest speakers were
ihe 12 Adams County exchangees
who spent three weeks this past
summer in Ireland. A lively ques
tion and answer period followed a
slide presentation by Jeanne
Smith, one of the exchangees.
A number of special recognition
awards were also presented. The
“Partners in 4-H Recognition”
award was presented this year to
the Gettysburg Lions Club. Each
year the Adams County 4-H prog
ram recognizes an organization or
individual who has made a signif
icant and long-term contribution to
the 4-H program. The Gettysburg
Lions Club has faithfully sup
ported the program through Club
sales and with continued financial
Youth For America
support. Richard Waybright,
Mason-Dixon Farms and a mem
ber of the Gettysburg Lions Club,
was on hand to accept the award on
the Club’s behalf.
All the leaders received recogni
tion with 29 individuals receiving
their first year leader pins. Special
pins and plaques were given to
individuals completing their fifth,
tenth, fifteenth, twentieth, and
twenty-fifth years as a leader.
Those with more than twenty-five
years of service included the fol
lowing: Helen Rex, 27 years, Mel
Durboraw, 28 years, Thomas Mur
ren, 39 years, and Teresa Murren,
42 years.
Several 4-H members were also
recognized for their completion of
Teen Leader Project. Those com
pleting Unit I were: Amy Brod
beck, Larry Fecser, Jr., Diane Join
er, Tanya Petry, Daniel Grim, and
Melanie Kuntz; Unit II: Jenny
Otto, Tara Petry, and Kathleen
Grim; and Unit HI: Chris Todt,
Tad Kuntz, David Smith, and Karl
Tyson.
Ron Hoffman, Treasurer of the
4-H Board of Directors, gave the
Annual Report. Noting that milch
of the board’s work is in public
relations, Hoffman reported that
they are presently working on a
4-H video for use in the schools
and for presentation to civic clubs.
Two other committees recently
established by the board are now
setting goals and looking for input.
These include a Club Task Force
and a Resource Development
Committee. Newly elected 4-H
Board of Directors are Brenda
Weaver, Nadine Stock, and Donna
Livelsberger.
