After five years of competing she won her first reserve championship trophy. Mallot,l9, son of Robert and Ruth Ann Mallott of Peach Bot tom, took the title with a 254-pound crossbred Hamp shire, Duroc and Yorkshire. This four-month old was pur chased from Klinefelter Brothers of Lebanon. It’s been a “great year” according to Mal lot. With the same breed of ani mal he won the Farm Show reserve championship this year. Kauffman, daughter of Robert and Susan Kauffman won reserve with her Duroc 4-H project bred by Jim Parlett of York County. She is alos from Peach Bottom. Matt Welk, 13, son of Paul and Beverly Welk of Quarryville took the reserve lightweight championship and also the reserve middleweight champ ionship in the class competition. Judging the show was Duff Brown Swiss Show Biggest In Fair History BY PAT PURCELL The 38th Solanco Fair hosted the biggest Brown Swiss show in the fair’s history at its Colored Breed Dairy competition on Wed nesday. Two Maryland competi tors Tom and Joy Crothers and both of Rising Sun contributed to the record number of entries. Dale Oliver of Atlantic Breeders Cooperative who judged the show said not only were number of entries up for the Brown Swiss, but that quality had shown a great improvement However, quality was not only improved in the Brown Swiss. Overall the animals were of better quality than when Oliver had judged a dairy show at the fair four years ago. Helen Arrows mith took the junior championship with her intermediate yearling, Hillacres Silver Beacon Este sired by Valleystream Silver Beacon. Hillacres Surville May sired by Vaucluse Sleeping Surville was bred by Tom’s brother Matthew and is Mike Mallott of Peach Bottom captured the Market Hog Grand Champion ship at the Solanco Fair. Swiss grand by Tom and and Richard Brown exhibited Crothers classified as an Excellent-90 and produces an average of more than 13,000 pounds. George and Doris Hough of Peach Bottom also had two first places in the Jersey class with one in the intermediate calf class and the other in the senior calf. Both animals were bred by the Houghs. The Pinelane Farm in Peach Bottom produced a string of champions in the Ayrshire divi sion. Warren Schnfuck took the grand championship with Holly’s Pride Jill sired by Mar-Ral Com mander’s Pride. This aged cow winner has a production in excess of 17,000 pounds with a 410 fat test, according to Schmuck. The winner has an Excellent-92 classi fication. Pinelane Harm is owned by Larry & Louise Schmuck of 1332 Furnace Road Peach Bottom. The Schmuck’s milk approximate ly 70 Ayrshires. Karen Hambrick, also of Pine lane Farm, took the junior and reserve junior championships. Hfr intermediate yearling. Beech Creek Pudge Starlight was sired by Caverly Farms Pudge and bred by John Stick. The reserve champion was bred by Hambrick, Pinelane S.S. Rugby. Michelle Gordon won the reserve title with her senior yearling, Pinelane Big Business Charm. Tom and Joy Crothers of Rising Sun, Maryland swept the top spots in four of the Brown Swiss classes as they rose to the grand champion and junior champion titles. Their 4-year-old dry cow, Brownswitch Performer Pigeon, bred by the 'Crothers, was sired by Maple Grove performer. The grand champion produced 20,200 pounds with 865 pounds of fat in her previous production period. Brown Swiss are in the minority at the Crothers’ farm. They have a milking herd of 120 Holsteins with 10 Brown Swiss. Steve Wagner of Quarryville took the reserve grand champion ship with a 2-year-old winner, Marly L. Toto sired by Bridge View Jasons Classic and bred by Marty Daubert. Scott and Steve Wagner, of Quarryville, sons of Robert and Joyce Wagner competed against each other in the Guernsey divi sion.
