THIS WEEK
Average prices received by
Pennsylvania fanners for eggs and
hay showed sharp increases during
the month ended Aug. 15, accord
ing to Federal-State surveys
announced Friday by the State
Department of Agriculture.
The advances sent the Pennsyl
vania index of prices received for
all principal products up seven
points or three percent. The index
now stands at 250 percent of the
1910-14 base level, the survey
shows.
Gov. George M. Leader Friday
said that Northeastern Pennsylva
nia dairy farmers could expect a 10
percent increase in their milk
checks thanks to the work of the
Northeastern Pennsylvania Dairy
Farmers Committee which he
appointed in October of last year.
One of the newest innovations,
and one of the most controversial,
in the dairy business is the use of
the milking parlor and loose
housing.
The practice was originated in
California where the milk climate
allows the cows to be outside all
year round with a minimum of
shelter. However, it has now
spread and been accepted through
out the country.
In Lancaster County the long
bam with stanchions still is the
favorite and is the practice recom
mended by the Pennsylvania State
University. But some dairymen in
the county have switched over to
the new system.
Pennsylvania poultry organiza
tions this week are scouring the
state’s chicken farms for entries in
the annual “Poultry Woman of the
Year” contest conducted through
out the Northeast by the Northeast
ern Poultry Producers.
