PFU Supports November
Referendum
HARRISBURG The Pen
nsylvania Fanners Union today
announced its support for the
upcoming statwide Referendum
on a $lOO million Farmalnd Pre
servation Bond issue. Voters will
be deciding the Referendum’s fate
at the November 3rd General
Election.
For many years the Pennsylva
nia Farmers Union, along with
other concerned organizations and
individuals, have supported efforts
to seek legislation which would
preserve prime farmland. Now the
opportunity is here, not just for far
mers, but for all citizens of Pen
nsylvania to join in an effort to
save farmland, said Allen Deiter,
President of the Pennsylvania Far
mers Union.
Governor Casey’s prompt
action in signing legislation
authorizing the Referendum and
his strong support of it is a positive
step toward preserving agriculture
in Pennsylvania, Detier told the
PFU Legislative Committee at
their meeting in State College. The
Committee later voted unanimous
ly to support this Referendum.
“Pennsylvania has lost an aver
age of 90,000 acres of farmland a
year to development This is a very
disturbing fact considering that
agriculture provides one out of
every five jobs in the state and adds
billipns of dollars to our state eco
nomy. It is critical that all voters in
this state support this important
issue,’’ Deiter added.
