where they now live. They milked
until 1974. Jaye, also 67, raises
com and alfalfa on the 85 acres and
raises heifers for other farmers.
They have three children, two boys
and a girl, none of whom are
involved with the farming
operation.
“My first love is the land and
Holstein cows, and my second is
woodworking,” says Jaye, who
went to night school in 1971 to
Jeam the craft He had heard a lot
of talk about diversifying, and
thought that woodworking would
be “a pleasant supplement”
In 1981 he built a large Morton
shed which is a combination farm
shop, machinery shed and wood
working shop. All the shop
machinery is on wheels, all the
lights on swivels. He has built six
full-sized grandmother clocks
here, restored various pieces of
furniture for customers, and built a
mantel clock which won first place
at the Franklin County Fair in
1984.

His current project is restoring
an antique rowboat for a customer.
“It was junk when I started with
it,” he related. “I have about 45
hours of labor in it” The fourteen
foot long boat is at least 75 years
old and seats five or six people. It is
covered with fiberglass, a material
he had never worked with before.
“I took it on as a challenge,” he
said.
His favorite piece of shop equip
ment is the lathe. “When I want to
relax, I play with the lathe,” he
said. He learned the technique
from a craftsman at the Franklin
County Fair several years ago, and
can turn anything from small thim
bles and bells to baby rattles on it.
He needs to keep current with such
fine work. “If you don’t turn any
thing for two weeks,” he
explained, “then, when you go
back to it, you think something’s
wrong with the machinery; it’s that
touchy.”
Jaye is also a fan of old farm
machinery. He has a 1968 John
Deere 4020 which he cleaned and

painted and now uses often in his
farming operation. He also has a
small antique twelve horsepower
John Deere H series tractor which
he plans on restoring. “It doesn’t
need much done to it,” he said.
The farmhouse contains a blend
of the talents of both spouses. The
kitchen cupboards and refinished
antiques are Jaye’s handiwork.
Daisy’s paintings, for which Jaye
made the frames, hang in every
room. They love their home and its
tree-shaded grounds and have no
plans to move anywhere else.
“We’d feel penned up if we moved
to a house,” Jaye said. “We’ll just

THIRTY-SEVEN YEARS
Montgomery County 4-H
Teens Win At Fashion Review
Creating your own clothes is
fun, money-saving, and a great
way to learn decision-making
along with clothing construction
skills. Over forty 4-H members
modeled their own creations at the
County 4-H Fashion Revue, one of
the yearly highlights of the 4-H
Clothing Program, held recently at
the Peter Becker Community in
Harleysville.
Five seniors, ages 14-19, and
three juniors, ages 13 and under,
were selected to represent Mont
gomery County 4-H Program at
the Southeast Region 4-H Fashion
Revue, July 24, at Ursinus
College.
Senior representatives included
Judy Park, North Wales; Rachel
Benner, Lansdale; Lisa Finnin,
Collegeville; Lisa Koehler,
Souderton; and Clorinda O’Leary,
Green Lane.
Selected juniors were Danielle
Detweiler, Souderton; Samantha
Candy, Hatfield; and Kristen
Schickling, Hatfield.
Two of the seniors, Judy Park
and Lisa Koehler, were selected to
represent Southeastern PA at the
State 4-H Fashion Revue, held at
hang on here like this.”
Admirers of their crafts hope
they will “hang on” there a long
time, pursuing their artistic talents.

Penn State University earlier this
month. Both scored high, with Lisa
placing in the top ten of the state.
The entrants are judged on gar
ment construction, fit, degree of
construction difficulty, appropri
ateness of garment for the 4-H
member and modeling ability. All
participants receive small prizes
provided by local businesses such
as Harleysville National Bank,
Harleysville Savings Association,
Harleysville Dairy Queen, Stroch
mann, Hennings Market, Conti
nental Bank, the Souder Store, and
Mellon Bank. Prizes for the win
ners were donated by “SEW
NEWS” and Lansdale Discount
House.
By participating in the series of
county, regional and state revues,
4-H Clothing and textile members
have a chance to turn self
consciousness into self
confidence. They learn about
wardrobe selection, the impor
tance of good posture, physical fit
ness, and other aspects of groom
ing. Sharing newly-learned know
ledge and skills with other
participants is also an important
part of the program.
