Sisters Win
ELIZABETHTOWN A pair
of belted Hampshire crossbreds
won the Elizabethtown Fair Mark
et Hog Show for a pair of sisters-
Karen and Melissa Becker,
daughters of Marlin and Nancy
Becker, Manheim R 3.
For Karen who had the grand
champion from the middleweight
division winning was not new
since she had won the prestigious
junior market hog grand champ
ionship at the Stale Farmshow and
also topped the Manheim Farms
how for the last two years.
But for little Melissa this was
only her second show, and she
maneuvered the heavyweight
champion into the reserve grand
champion spot under the watchful
eye of Judge Keith Bard, a Cam
bria County hog farmer.
When asked how they keep
coming up with these winners,
Becker family members said you
need to start with a good prospect.
The Beckers also keep their entries
in an exercise lot rather than on a
slanted floor.
Other winners in the opening
night activities included: Tracy
Bollinger, champion lightweight;
Sharon Haldeman, reserve champ
ion lightweight; Dennis Halde

Ellen Lewis sold her market lamb to Leroy Fox, Fox
Markets, Middletown, for a record $7.75 a pound.
Kunzler 111 for $2.00 a pound. Kunzler also purchased
Karen Becker’s champion hog for $5.00 a pound.

Musser Wins First Championship
BY PAT PURCELL
“It’s about time,” was all Doug
Musser had to say as he left the
show ring at the Elizabethtown
Fair Beef Show on Wednesday
night with the grand champion
trophy.
“I’ve been doing this for seven
years and this is the first time I won
the championship. It’s about
time,” said Musser, the 16-year
old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Z.
Musser of 566 Green Tree Road,
Elizabethtown.
For seven years Musser has
been raising beef steers in 4-H and
FFA as projects and this was his
first champion. Musser’s time had
certainly arrived. As he walked his
grand champion, named Beef, to
the bam, his second steer was
being selected as the reserve
champion.

Cumberland County extension
agent, David Hartman, judged the
15-steer event. Hartman selected
the steer because of its excellent
height and length and uniformity
throughout.
‘This steer clearly dominates
the group we have here tonight,”
said Hartman.
This grand champion, although
may not have seen the winner’s
circle before, has been in the spot
light before. Beef made an appear

for Kunzler’s all-beef franks a few
months ago.
The reserve champion named

In the showmanship and fitting
competition, Dwayne Coble of
Dauphin County took the senior

prize steer had been used for a

earlier this year. Chris Kunzler 111
also bought Karen Becker’s
