Bedford County Fair BEDFORD In a closely con tested event that found Judge Joy ce Hileman of Apollo handling and rehandling, hand measuring and patting, a 114-lb. lamb owned and shown by Beth Barkley of Manns Choice, finally managed the grand champion market lamb banner at the Bedford County Fair. Admitting her decision was a difficult one, Hileman said her final selection was based on length of loin of Barkley’s heavyweight division champ, a crossbred pur chased from the flock of Dirk Wise, Spring Mjills. Giving Barkley a tough run tow ard the prize was Gwendolyn Gray of Schellsburg, exhibiting a 107-lb. middleweight champion from her own Suffolk flock. And it was this entry that Hileman selected for the over all reserve banner. Barkley’s champion was the second in her 4-H lamb career. The 18-year-old sophomore at Penn State’s Altoona Campus said this would mark her last year compet ing with lambs. Gray, Pennsylvania Lamb and Wool Queen, noted that this year’s prizes exactly mimicked those she’d earned at last year’s Bedford Fair. She, too, had exhibited one grand champion.
