Jennifer and Eric are two of 46 4-H members from Pennsylvania selected to attend. The program is designed to help young people understand the structure and func tion of our government, country heritage and the ‘importance of active citizen participation. Nine states were represented. Using the nation’s capital as “classroom,” the program included a day on Capitol Hill to meet with members of Congress and see government in action. On the visit to Capitol Hill they met with Rep. Robert Walker. The Pennsylvania delegation also met with Senators Arlen Specter and John Heinz, 111. Field trips to historical and cul home economist Lon Waltz pre sented a video look at how fashion happens, and Linda Siegel, former Lebanon County 4-H agent, dis cussed competition and stress. The three Regional contests are crucial in preparing 4-H’ers for state level competition to be held during Penn State 4-H Week, August 3 to 6, at Penn State Uni versity. The week’s activities will feature recognition of 4-H’ers demonstrated activities, leadership training, opportunities for cultural and intellectual enrichment, per spective on current concerns of young people, and challenge to 4-H’ers skills and knowledge. tural sites as well as to federal agencies and community organiza tions were among the most infor mative and exciting parts of the week for the 4-H’ers. Some of the interesting field trips included a night view of Washington, visits to various agencies and organiza tions, Capitol Hill Day, Kennedy Center, and the United States Navy Yard to view the summer cere mony of pageantry and precision. They also enjoyed an evening at a Washington, D.C. dinner theatre. In workshop sessions at the National 4-H Center, the young people discussed contemporary issues and concerns, and ways in which skills and knowledge gained during the week can be applied to the 4-H program here in Lebanon County. For Jennifer and Eric, one of the best parts of the experience was the opportunity to share ideas with other 4-H members from across the country.
