In addition young seedlings can survive die winter months in the firmer seed bed provided by no-dll. Myers added that the more crop residue the more likelihood of conserving additional moisture and obtaining a quicker more uni form stand. Factors to consider in no-till for age seedings should include; 1. Soil fertility and pH level based on soil test 2. Uniformity of the field surface. 3. Evaluation of exiting weeds and developing a spray program to meet the needs. In conjunction with no-till planting in Dauphin County, Lynn Hoffman, Manager of the Rock Springs Agronomy Farm at Penn State will be conducting no-till for age demonstrations during the Agricultural Management Day at the Paul Clugston Farm (Halifax) on July 31. Planting demonstra tions are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Lynn will discuss adjustment of no-till drills, weed control in no-till and the benefits of no-till fotage plantings, individu als having specific questions relat ing to any type of no-till planting should plan to see Lynn sometime between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. As a followup to this planting demonstration several no-till for age demonstrations are scheduled in the Lykens Valley area on August 13. The first of these will be held on the Calvin Mauser Farm, RD, Elizabethville from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the second will be held on the Ray Matter Farm west of Berrysburg along Route 25 at 7:00 p.m. These Quality Products - Low Prices Aureo 50G (Granular) $62.80 CTC 50 $56.15 Pfichlor 50 $56.20 Pen Strep 25 $73.40 Tylan 10 $57.95 Tylan 10 Sulfa G $72.35 Apralan 7.5 $63.08 CSP 250 Farm Blend $65.55 Vimecterin Horse Warmer Reg. $10.95 Now $7.25 All Prices Net Picked Up At Gap, PA Sale Prices Thru 8/25/87 On Current'lnventory Only Call For Additional Information On Any Of Our Products — Store Hours Mon.-Thurs. 7:JO AM - 5:30 PM Friday 7:30 AM - 8:00 PM Saturday 8:00 AM - 2:00 PM Stoltzfus Feed and Supply P.O. An Opportunity For Fall Seedings plantings will provide individuals with a first hand opportunity to observe fall forage seedings of alfalfa. On August 27, there will be a twilight tour of no-till soybean plantings with different weed con trol programs. More details will be released later on this program. Interested individuals may contact the Soil Conservation Service 564-6155 or the Cooperative Extension Service 564-6956. Individuals interested in no-till forage seedings in August and planting of no-till small grains and cover crops should make arrange ments for a no-till drill as early as possible. Last year over 500 acres of no-till fall grains and cover crop were successfully planted in Dau phin County. Early plantings were usually most successful, but late plantings will usually be equal to or better than late conventional Avian Influenza Outbreak In China CHICAGO, 11. The first out break of Avian Influenza ever reported in China occurred recen tly in a Beijing chicken egg laying farm and “spread from one house to the next like dominos until over 400,000 birds were infected,” Timothy S. Chang, PhD, of Michi gan State University reported to the 124th annual meeting of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). “Because the disease was unfa miliar to staff veterinarians, it was not diagnosed for two weeks, and by then all birds on the farm had been infected,” Chang reported. Diseased birds were all destroyed and incinerated with the assistance of military personnel and equipment The unprecedented outbreak occured when 1,000 pet birds AUGUST MO, 2 mis S of 170 on Rt THURS AUG 6 - 6PM 65 (Tharpsburg Pike) Mrs Maple Lawn Auction, Rt. Myers continued by indicating that current ASCS cost-sharing programs in Dauphin County do include no-till planting with grain drills. For further information in Dauphin County contact ASCS by calling 652-8401. Requests for cost-sharing should be made well in advance of actual planting. In summary Myers indicated that weed control in no-till crops will be emphasized in no-till prog rams. He added that good weed control is needed to obtain top yields with no-till plantings. This can only be achieved by identify ing existing weed problems and developing a program to control those problem weeds. For further information on no-till planting contact Joel Myers by calling 564-6155. imported from another Asian nation were temporarily housed in a vacant building ten feet away from the laying house. For some reason, these pet birds had not gone through poultry quarantine procedures. “These pet birds started to die of a respiratory disease almost immediately after their arrival. Fortunately, Avian Influenza did not spread to nearby chicken breeder flocks, turkey breeders, and commercial broiler farms,” Chang reported. China was the number one poul try production nation before World War 11. It is believed that Avian Influenza might have appeared in Asia, possibly even in China, before this outbreak, but it was not officially recorded and reported in Chinese poultry archives. The A VMA, based in the Chica go suburb of Schaumburg, is the professional association of 'the nation’s 44,000 veterinarians. Over 300 scientific presentations were made at the July annual meet ing, the largest gathering of veter inarians in North America.
