How Sweet It Is
HARRISBURG Ice Cream
lovers converged on the steps of
the Capitol this week to celebrate
Summer Love Sundae Tuesday.
"We are attempting to bring ice
cream to the awareness of the con
sumer in Harrisburg with this
celebration,” explained William
Smedley, program manager for the
Pennsylvania Dairy Promotion
Program. The Pennsylvania milk
promotion group co-sponsored the
event with the Keystone Ice Cream
Association.
Volunteers dipped over 10,000
sundaes, or the equivalent of 600
gallons of ice cream, during the
event which also spotlighted Gov
ernor Robert Casey’s proclaiming
Ron and Marcia Pershall’s children take a break
from serving ice cream at Summer Love Tuesday to
enjoy the frozen dairy treat. Laura, 2, (front) Jennifer,
16, (left) David, 9, Scott, 7, and Jessica, 4, volunteered
to serve the ice cream on the steps of the Capitol in
Harrisburg. Ron is president of Viking Chocolate, one
of the 23 companies which sponsored the event.

July as ice cream month in
Pennsylvania.
In his proclamation Casey
wrote, “In 1986, for the second
consecutive year, ice cream pro
duction in the Commonwealth
registered a 5 percent gain, and the
state moved from fifth to fourth
place nationally in the number of
dairy and ice cream plants, with a
total of 100 located throughout the
Commonwealth.” Casey noted
that Pennsylvania ranks first in the
nation in the per capita consump
tion of ice cream, second in the
manufacture of ice cream, and
third in the production of soft ice
cream.
