Research Lab Sets Open House UNIVERSITY PARK Penn State’s Erie County Field Research Laboratory in North East is gear ing up for an August 13 open house that will show how its research helps the grape industry. Tours of field research plots and a variety of demonstrations will begin at 1 p.m. One highlight will be demonstrations of a new computer-based expert system for grapes. An expert system is a com puter program that works like a human expert by organizing infor mation and narrowing options to identify problems and make recommendations - and the Erie County lab is the first to develop Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 1, 1987-Al7 such a system for a specific crop. Visitors will also see demon strations of new herbicides, new plant growth regulators for Con cord grapes, effects of cultivation and noncultivation on vineyard insect populations and a research plot for the study of downy mildew control on grapes. Researchers will be on hand to talk about several new seedless table varieties of grapes, and stu dies with plant growth regulators to increase fruit size. In addition to research tours and demonstrations, several exhibitors of vineyard equipment, supplies and chemicals will be at the lab. A picnic will be held at 5:30. Farms Earn National Guernsey Honors COLUMBUS, Ohio Axel Linde and Mildred Linde Wid mann of Lindenhoff Guernsey Farm in Oxford, Pa., for the seventh-time received the Ameri can Guernsey Association’s Dou ble Gold Star Breeder Award. This prestigious award recog nizes an individual’s herd 305-day, two-time, lactation aver age that exceeds the breed’s national milk or butterfat average by 25 percent AGA requires 80 percent of the cows in the herd’s production average have appraisal scores. Their type scores must be breed average or higher. The award recipients are active mem bers at the state and national levels and bred at least 70 percent of their herd. They are members of an mOMBARDINI meeting beginning at 6:30. Infor mation for growers, including a review of the season, problems and concerns, marketing and disease control, will be discussed. The Erie County Field Research Laboratory is one of three field research laboratories operated by Penn State’s College of Agricul ture. This year Penn State is cele brating the 100th anniversary of the Hatch Act, legislation that set aside federal funds to support agri cultural research in all states.
