Conservation Field Day At
The Lancaster County Conser
vation District is holding a Conser
vation Tillage Field Day on
August 12, 1987 at the Herbert
Myer farm in West Lampeter
Township. Emphasis will be on the
tillage research currently being
undertaken by the Pennsylvania
State University to help determine
the effectiveness rtf various tillage
systems.
Herbert Myer, who coined the
term slit-till, has been using the
slit-till system on his farm for more
than 10 years. Slit-til] is a type of
conservation system which gives
better results the longer it is prac
ticed. Slits are applied on the con
tour in a way that does not loosen
up the whole layer of topsoil. This
permits increased infiltration,
adding to the surface and subsur
face water storage capacity, which
decreases the chances for exces
sive erosion. Mr. Myer sais that he
gets very little runoff from his
fields that have been under the slit
tin system for a period of several
years.

State University visited the Myer
farm last winter and agreed that
research should be conducted on
the site to substantiate what they
were seeing. At this field day parti
cipants will be able to hear from
some of these researchers who will
tell us why the slit-till system does
so well, and how they are conduct
ing their research. The equipment
on the farm includes automatic
rain gauges, infiltrometers, and
automatic recording flowmeters
that measure any water that might
run off of a field.
In addition John Yocum from
the Landis ville Research Farm will
be discussing compaction. This
will be an educational meeting so
anyone with questions related to
tillage should be at the field day to
quiz the experts.
Those who are at the farm by
11:00 will be able to see the infil
trometer testing procedure for
