DlO-Lancastcr Fanning Saturday, August 1, 1987 Lycoming Livestock Competitions (Continued from Pago D 9) homebred Polled Hereford, Trix, to the fact that, “I’m bigger this year and I know more.” According to her father, Trix was sired by Enforcer 107 H Bull. This is the second year Angela has been exhibiting animals at the fair. In addition to her win above, this year her Dorset ewe won the grand champion prize in the youth sheep breeding show, and reserve champion in the open show. Angela says her favorite part of showing animals is getting rib bons. Whereas she says, giving the steers baths ranks lowest on her list of duties. “Steers are hard to give baths to, lambs are not as big.” Laural Lovell with her two grand champion trophies in the youth market lamb and market hog divisions this year has been exhi biting animals at the fair for five years. In previous years she copped trophies for the reserve grand champion steer and grand champion market lamb. Laura’s wether, Adam, is home bred using a ram purchased from Max Dehart, Milton. The grand champion market hog was a Duroc. The best part of showing is win ning money according to Laura, but before winning she must per form her least favorite task, that of cleaning out the pens. Ralph and Marion Lovell, parents of the sisters, have been involved in 4-H for much of their lives, first as members and for the past few years as leaders of Bottle Run 4-H along with Debbie Cor ter. Ralph says most of their steers and lambs are homebred. Marion adds that last year they started planning this year’s fair exhibits on the way home from the fair. She attributes their children’s succes ses to, “Prayer, hard work, and a little luck.” Winner of the reserve grand champion market lamb was Cathy Murray, 18, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Murray, Muncy, Cathy’s Hamp-Suffolk cross lamb, also named Adam, was purchased from Dave T. Albert, Trout Run. A member of the Little Muncy Creek 4-H, Cathy has been in 4-H six years, and showing sheep a tot al of four years. In other years she has won the reserve grand champ ionship in open beef show and last year took both the 4-H and open grand trophies in the steer competition. Cathy says she wanted to win the sheep competition before leav ing 4-H. Her lamb won, she says, because the judge liked it and also because of her showmanship. Animals, Cathy reports, are the best part of 4-H projects and com petitions. “I love animals,” she says. “I don’t know what I’d do if I had to give them up.” To win the lamb shows, Cathy advises 4-H’ers to walk their lambs to muscle them and to make sure they are clean. Melanie Jarrett, age 7, captured the reserve grand champion mark et hog award. The daughter of Mike and Nancy Jarrett, Mont gomery, Melanie is a junior 4-H member of the Bald Eagle 4-H Club. Her york-cross pig. Piglet, was purchased from Leon Arnold, Lebanon. Stating she was, “Happy and proud to win,” Melanie thought one of the best things about her ,4-H endeavor was that showing her pig turned out to'be fun. Her one tip on showing Was to “practice with it a lot” Melanie also won a master showing and fit ting with her pig, and won first place with her calf in the junior calf class in the youth dairy show which isn’t bad, considering this is her first year in 4-H.
