More Diversity
This year’s Wye Field Day will
feature useful information to help
fanners manage their businesses
better, new free services to help
families improve their health, and
workshops that focus on keeping
farm and family finances in order.
The annual Wye Field Day
scheduled this year for Thursday,
August 27 at the Wye Research
and Education Center near Queen
stown is sponsored by The Uni
versity of Maryland.
The Wye Field Day is a day
long open house for the Wye
Research and Education Center.
University of Maryland scientists,
Extension specialists and teaching
faculty work collectively at the
Center to solve major problems
facing Maryland agriculture.
“Our focus this year is on the
importance of new technology as
the driving force for progress in
agriculture,” says Russ Brinsfield,
head of the Wye Research and
Education Center.
“All of our research and educa
tional efforts at the Center are
geared toward applying new tech
nology to solve common problems
facing Maryland agriculture,”
Brinsficld adds.
‘The Wye Field Day is an
opportunity for us to show the
public how we are meeting that
challenge. And it’s an opportunity
for visitors to get free information
they can use to manage their farm
or family business more effective
ly,” he says.
The following are highlights of
the 1987 Wye Field Day:
• Registration starts at 8:30 a.m.
Three concurrent tours also begin
at that time. If you want to go on all
three tours, be sure to arrive early.
The three tours are: Field Crops
and Soils, Fruits and Vegetables,
and Animal Sciences.
• New this year an Organic
Fanning Clinic.
• Farm and Family Finance
Workshops.
• Buffet luncheon along the
scenic Wye River.
• Plant, Weed, and Integrated
Pest Management clinics.
• New this year the “Health
Tent,” with nutrition and health
related demonstrations, free
services.
• Computer analysis to improve
farm management decisions.
• Crab feast.
• The latest in innovative farm
equipment.
The Wye Research and Educa
tion Center is located just off US
50-East, approximately midway
between the Chesapeake Bay
Bridges and Easton, Md. From
route 50, turn onto Carmichael Rd.
near Chesapeake College and fol
low the signs to the Wye Field Day
registration and parking.
