Lewis Family At Shindig
The Lewis Family will make
their 80th appearance at the 20th
anniversary of the Shindig In The
Bam. This bluegrass concert will
be held Saturday, August 1, at
Martin’s Sale Bam east of Inter
course. Doors open at 6 p.m. Con
cert starts at 8 p.m.
The story of The Lewis Family
dates from about 1950, when Roy
("Pop”) Lewis, Sr. and “some of
my children” began to perform at
“singings” in rural churches and
schoolhouses in the northeast
Georgia and western South Caroli
na area surrounding their Lincoln
ton, Georgia home. In April, 1954,
the group landed a one hour Sun
day morning live telecast on
Augusta’s powerful WJBF, Chan
nel Six. Having never missed a
broadcast in the same time slot and

family of Pop Lewis was in the
original group, including daught
ers Miggie, Polly and Janis and
sons, Wallace and Roy Lewis, Jr.,
the inimitable “Little Roy.” Wal
lace’s son Travis joined the cast in
1974, followed in 1979 by then
six-year-old Lewis Phillips, son of
Janis Lewis Phillips. The diversity
of ages within The Lewis Family
is fitting, for the unit’s magic appe
al to fans sweeps a wide swath,
extending from the youngest in an
audience to the eldest.
