SCHAEFFERSTOWN - Old
tune country foods will be a
leading attraction July 11 and 12
during Historic Schaefferstown’s
annual Folk Festival.
Saturday, July 11, is the date for
the first Black Raspberry Custard
Pie Baking Contest with a first
prize of $75 for the winning recipe
and a $25 second prize.
There will be tasting sessions
throughout the day, including
raspberry custard pie, cherry pie,
schnitz pie, dried string beans
cooked with ham, dried coni and
other traditional foods.
A number of stoves, two
fireplaces, the large 1771 bake
oven and outdoor kettles will be
making bread, cookies, pies and
other old-time foods.

Folk Festival To Feature Flo Contest
The new dry house will be drying
string beans, com, cherries, ap
ples and other farm products to
show how farm families preserved
their foods in times past.
Copies of Schaefferstown’s third
annual Recipe Booklet will be
available and other recipes will be
given free to visitors. Dave Gott
shall’s Country Classics will
provide musical entertainment.
Sunday, July 12, is Pennsylvania
Dutch Day, featuring a traditional
Reformed Church service in the
German language at 2:30 P.M.
This will be enhanced by songs
presented by the Tulpehocken
Sangerchor and the
Goschenhoppen Sing Gemeinde. In
the pavilion, the Rehrersburg
Band will entertain.

Sheep herding with Scotch
Border Collies will be held Sunday,
July 12 only.
On both days, numerous craft
smen will demonstrate and offer
hand-made items for sale. There
will be wagon rides, garden tours,
house tours and a view of the large
collection of antique farm im
plements and a fine gift shop to
visit.
Farm demonstrations, including
wheat harvesting with cradle,
reaper and binder, threshing with
flail and old-time thresher, stone
crushing and wood sawing.
Schaefferstown is located at the
junction of Routes 897 and 501 in
Lebanon County. Admission is
$2.50 for adults. Children under 12,
free.
Scheafferstown Folk Festival. This year's event is scheduled
for July 11 and 12.
Boots and Saddles 4-H Club Plans Book Fair
The Boots and Saddles 4-H Club
is sponsoring a book fair during the
Lancaster County 4-H Fair, August
18 to 20 at the Solanco Fairgrounds,
to raise funds for its community
service project.
This year, the club has decided
to donate funds to the Make A Wish
Foundation, which works to grant
wishes to terminally ill children.
The club’s book sale will offer
books ranging from horses to fairy
tales.
The club is also participating in a
pony baseball game Sept. 13. They
have accepted a challenge from
Saddle Cinches Club.

During the Lancaster County 4-H
Fair, the club will defend its title
as 1986 volleyball champions and
will compete in the horse coloring
book contest, poster contest,
scrapbook contest and club
exhibit. The theme this year will be i
“to make the best better.”
Club members are taking
donations for the 4-H auction.
Following the business meeting,
Mrs. Miller explained the Hip
pology Contest, which will be
added to both regional and state
competitions. It involves all kinds
of practical knowledge about
horses from hitches and knot tying
to horse and hay judging.
