    Lower Dauphin FFA Honors Parents, Me
HUMMELSTOWN - The 27th
annual parent-member banquet of
the Lower Dauphin FFA Chapter
was held recently in the senior high
school cafeteria with over 100
members and guests present.
The highlight of the evening was
the presentation of the Honorary
Chapter Farmer Degree to JohiTT.
Cassel and Herbert Yerger, two
members of the Lower Dauphin
School Board. These board
members have strongly supported
vocational agriculture and the
FFA during their tenure. Many of
the chapter activities would not
have been possible without their
assistance.
James Landvater, a former
DeKalb award winner, presented
the DeKalb Agricultural
Achievement Award to Tammy
Baker, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Virgil Baker of Elizabethtown.
Tammy has served as treasurer of
the Lower Dauphin chapter this
year and has also served as
chapter secretary and reporter in
the past. She maintains a vo-ag
project in sheep breeding and
finishing, and conducts a work
experience project in agricultural
processing. She has served as a
member of the chapter’s
parliamentary procedure team for
the past four years, has par
ticipated in meats, land, and
livestock judging, and has shown
her lambs at the Elizabethtown
Fair and the Pennsylvania State
Farm Show.
Doug Bauder received the
Citizenship Award. Doug, the son
of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bauder of
Elizabethtown, is chapter
president and has maintained vo-

ag projects in sweet com and
strawberry production, as well as
in beef breeding and finishing.
Doug has also served as a member
of the chapter’s parliamentary
procedure team for four years.
Herbert Yerger, a member of the
Board of Education at Lower
Dauphin, presented this award.
Sharon Huntzberger received
the Star Chapter Farmer award,
which is given to the outstanding
student who has earned the
Chapter Farmer degree. Sharon
has served as this year’s chapter
vice-president, and has also served
as chapter treasurer in the past.
Sharon’s vo-ag project is an out
standing swine breeding and
finishing project, for which she
was recently named the state FFA
swine production proficiency
award winner. Sharon has also
been Dauphin County’s Star Swine
Producer for the past three years.
Receiving special recognition
with Achievement awards were
Sue Zerphey and Dave Cheris.
These two seniors have served as
chapter officers for several years,
participated in numerous FFA
activities, and have maintained
outstanding SOE projects.
The Star Greenhand award,
presented to the outstanding first
year FFA member, was given to
Keith Halbleib. Keith received
statewide recognition for his SOE
project book and finished sixth in
the area creed speaking contest.
Keith’s project is work experience
on his brother’s farm.

State Keystone Degree pins were
presented by John T. Cassel,
school board member, to three
Lower Dauphin chapter members __
Tammy Baker, Sharon Huntz- “
berger, and Darren Weaver. Mr.
and Mrs. Marvin Weaver were
honored for having three children
who earned the Keystone Degree.
In addition, John Haldeman was
recognized for receiving the
American Farmer Degree, the
highest award the National FFA '
organization offers.
Scholarship pins, presented to
members who made the honor roll
two out of three marking periods
this year, were given to Steve
Kiner, Tammy Baker, Sue Zer
phey, Dale Morgan, Eric
Crawford, and Stan Tetzloff.
Several county FFA awards
were presented by the Harrisburg
Kiwanis Club. The club sponsors
these awards, presented to out
standing FFA members from
Lower Dauphin, Halifax, and
Upper Dauphin High Schools.
Trophies were presented to FFA
members who either won various
contests or were selected for
outstanding proficiency in several
fields.

Dale Balmer, Pennsylvania
State FFA chaplain, offered
several remarks to the chapter. A
slide series highlighting the ac
tivities of the past year was also
presented. Finally, official closing
ceremonies by Dawn Herr, 1987-88
chapter president, ended the
banquet.
Ladies Day Out
Set For July 22
The Region One PFA Ladies Day
Out is scheduled for July 22 at the
Holiday Inn in Kulpsville.
According to Dottie Bartels, a
member of the State Women’s
Committee, the program will
feature Jan Carson from PFA, Lou
Ann Rittenhouse, an image con
sultant who will speak on color
coordination; a musical comedy;
and Bruce Rothenberger, a
chiropractor.
A sit-down ham luncheon will be
served and door prizes awarded.
Cost is $ll per person. The
program will run from 10 a.m. to
2:30 p.m. with registration
beginning at 9:30 a .m.
