Report Supplied by USDA
Slaughter steers and heifers
closed firm to 1.00 higher than the
previous week. Good buyer
demand and stronger dressed beef
markets prompting the mild up
turn. Packers in the last stages of
cleaning up the contract cattle
they have been drawing on for
most of the month, and this im
proved demand. Buyers still very
selective, seeking those cattle
promising higher percentage of
choice carcasses on the rail, as the
current spread between choice and
good carcasses is $13.00-16.00 per
cwt.
Slaughter cows finished the week
1.00 higher. Slaughter bulls closed
2.00-3.00 higher.
No recent test on feeder cattle to
establish a trend.
Estimated 5 day receipts of
cattle this week 4,700 compared to
actuals last week of 4,475 and 6,450
last year. Slaughter steers ac
counted for 51 percent of receipts
this week, slaughter heifers 31
percent, slaughter cows 12 per
cent, feeder cattle 5 percent.
