Purebred Angus Added To Alfred
ALFRED, NY - Alfred State
College recently added seven
purebred Angus to the institution’s
beef program.
The new arrivals are four cows,
two heifer calves, and a bull calf,
all obtained from Wayne Heyden of
Morrisville. More are expected to
be added, according to Lee
Laßochelle, assistant professor of
animal science, and Tim Pajda,
livestock herdsman.
“By integrating Angus into the
livestock program, we provide
students a chance to gain practical
experience with purebred
registered cattle and to become
familiar with management
techniques unique to them,” said
I
Before the Angus arrived, the
College’s commercial beef herd
consisted of a three-breed
rotational cross of Angus,
Charolais, and Simmental cattle.
Plans are being made to show
the purebred Angus at various
fairs during the summer of ’BB.

Alfred’s 800-acre college farm
already manages the largest
commercial beef herd of any two
year state university college,
according to Laßochelle, who said
addition of purebred Angus
“enables us to enhance our
livestock program while still
maintaining the high standards of
the commercial herd.”
He said an important reason for
adding purebred Angus to the beef
program is that although many
students will work with com
mercial cattle after graduation,
more and more are finding jobs
with purebred operations.
To illustrate beef industry
support of the new dimension,
Warren Bippert of Alden has
donated enough high quality
semen from such Angus bulls as
New Yorker, Foolish Pride,
Firecracker, Sayre Patriot, and
New York New York to breed the
four Angus cows this spring.
Hands-on training which
students receive includes complete
responsibility for grooming cattle
in preparation for sales and shows,
Laßochelle said, adding that
students are also assigned cattle
which they must train and groom
for the annual Showmanship Day
