Lea therman To Reign LEESPORT Clarinda Leatherman became the 1987 Berks County Dairy Princess last Saturday at the coronation banquet held at the Berks County Agricultural Center. The daughter of Dan and Nancy Leatherman, Hamburg, served as the 1986 Alternate Dairy Princess for the county. As part of her presentation, Clarinda adjusted the song “It’s a Small World” to a milk promotion tone. “It is fitness you should drink” she encouraged the audience and reminded them, “It is nature’s perfect food.” Clarinda is a senior at Christopher Dock Mennonite High School where she is a school business assistant. She is president of her church youth group at Oley Mennonite Church. The newly crowned dairy princess works part-time as a bookkeeper for a local bank. Her parents own and operate a 147-acre dairy farm and milk a 60- cow Holstein herd. Kay Fessler was chosen as the 1987 Alternate Dairy Princess. Kay is a junior at Conrad Weiser High School where she is president of the Future Farmers of America Chapter. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Fessler, Robesonia, she plans to attend Penn State to study nursing. Her parents own and operate a 600-acre dairy farm where they maintain an 83-cow Holstein herd. Kay assumed the role of a radio announcer as part of her promotional presentation. She noted, Sticks and stones can break one’s bones and so will the lack of calcium. “Milk is mankind’s ideal liquid knockout,” Kay told the audience. Jaclyn K. Troutman was chosen by the audience as the 1987 Li’l Miss Berks County Dairy Princess. She is the 5-year-old daughter of Mary and Nelson Troutman, Richland. Also competing for the title of Li’l Miss were Lisa Phillips, Jessica Aloan and Julie A. Zook. Additional contestants for the title of Berks County Dairy Princess were Linda Latshaw, Shaun O’Neil and Heather Schlegel.
