A severe shortage can cut com yields dramatically. And even a slight deficiency can reduce the quality of com used for forage. But livestock farmers can typically prevent a shortage in fields where they spread manure, says V. Allan Bandel, a fertilizer specialist for The University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service. That’s because manure is sulfur rich. Consider: Each ton of cattle manure contains a pound of sulfur, on the average and a single ton of chicken manure averages nine pounds of this protein-building chemical. Most other kinds of livestock manure contain .2 to two pounds of sulfur per ton. Sulfur deficiencies are most likely on light, sandy soil like those on Maryland’s Eastern Shore as well as on farms throughout the state where no livestock manure is spread. Since the temporary tolerance is established for peanuts, com and wheat the crops treated under this EUP can be marketed without restrictions. Additional crops being sub mitted for clearance will be alfalfa and sorghum. deficient soils are low in organic matter. How can you spot a sulfur problem? Look for a yellowing of leaves, starting at the top of a plant. Conversely, a nitrogen deficiency reveals itself when yellowing starts at the bottom of a plant. You can correct a sulfur shor tage in com by applying 40 pounds of sulfur per acre, says Bandei. Then apply approximately 20 pounds of sulfur per acre in following growing seasons. You can also easily remedy the problem with direct manure ap plications. But to apply the correct amounts of manure, you need to test both your soil and the manure that you will apply. For a free manure test and a soil test that’s accurate and modestly priced, take advantage of the soil testing laboratory at The University of Maryland College Park.
