elected were: Nick Kravetsky,
Orson, vice president; Robert
Williams, Starruca, treasurer; and
Janet Lepro, Orson, secretary.
As president of the local, Pazel
will serve on the state board of
directors of the Pennsylvania
Farmers Union.
Chet Reed, executive director of
PFU, presented a background on
the organization to the group.
William Sturges, a PFU field
man from Wellsboro, offered
assistance to the producers and
noted he would be doing mem
bership work in the county.
Arden Tewksbury, manager of
the Farmers Union Northern Tier
Milk Cooperative, thanked those
farmers who aided PFU’s in
volvement with Scheps Cheese in
1983. Tewksbury singled out Pete
Carnick, Waymart, for his work
for the Scheps producers.
Tewksbury urged the group to
support PFU’s attemt to prevent
any further reductions in the milk
support price. The price is
scheduled to drop to $ll.lO per
hundredweight on Oct. 1,1987 and
to $10.60 on Jan. 1,1988.
In July 1987 for Federal Order 2,
Tewksbury predicted a net gross
blend price of nearly $1.75 per
hundredweight less than July 1981.
He pointed out that the average
dairy farmer in the area paid
$lO,OOO in assessments or higher
hauling costs since 1981.
