DER Surveys Mushroom Growers
NORRISTOWN - The Depart
ment of Environmental Resources
is currently conducting a survey of
all mushroom growing facilities
and housing in Chester, Delaware,
Berks and Lancaster counties,
announced Norristown Regional
Sanitarian Lewis L. Luchic, Jr.
“We need to know if these
facilities could be classified as
seasonal farm labor camps," said
Luchie. “If they are, these
operations are regulated by
DER.”
The quantitative survey is being
conducted for DER by the Chester
County Intermediate Unit, and is
expected to continue for several
months. The survey team will
document the types of growing
facilities, operating season,
housing and the number of workers
and other residents at these
operations.
Luchie added, “We expect
complete cooperation, since these

Department action if they fail to

they are later found to be providing
housing for seasonal farm
laborers.”
In addition to taking information
from mushroom farm operators,
the Chester County Intermediate
Unit will also produce educational
materials and services in con

Seasonal Farm Labor Program.
When completed, these materials
will be used by the Department in
developing an outreach program
at seasonal farm labor camps and
the Spanish speaking community.
The survey, is expected to extend
to approximately 350 facilities in
the four countv area. Regional
