FUTURES MARKET TRENDS
GRAIN AND LIVESTOCK
ACRES SOYBEAN UPDATE:
Soybean futures closed mixed
from down 1-1/2 cent in the
deferreds to up 1-1/4 in the old crop
option. May beans opened lower,
traded higher, then lower again
and finally closed on the highs for
the day. Beans were lower midday
on light farmers selling. The up
side resistance remains strong
near current levels and the fears
remain of increased interior
movement. The competition from
South America still figures
prominently in this market. Major
resistance is at $5.15 with major
support at $4.95.
ACRES WHEAT UPDATE:
Wheat futures closed mixed with
May up 3/4 cents and July down 1-
1/2 cent. Bull spreading by locals
of May/July helped the nearby

while adding pressure to the July
option. Futures were on the
defensive most of the day because
selling has been linked to profit
taking on ideas recent advances
were overdone and the market was
due for a technical correction. The
estimate this morning that wheat
losses in Kansas and Oklahoma
were pegged at 100 million bushels
from winterkill did not seem to
have any impact on today’s
trading session.
ACRES CATTLE UPDATE;
Live cattle closed higher again
today supported by strong cash
fundamentals. Futures opened
sharply higher boosted by
Tuesday’s heavy boxed beef
movement at sharply higher
prices. Carcass beef printed at

noon and is unquoted this af
ternoon. We have yet to see quotes
of $71.00, but have heard rumors.
Feeders came back after midday
losses, spurred by commercial and
commission house buying, to close
slightly higher. Demand remains
strong for replacement feeders.
CME FEEDER CATTLE
SETTLEMENT: $69.46 as of
4/06/87 + $.14
Estimated slaughter today was
127,000.
ACRES HOG UPDATE: Cash
hogs traded steady to $ .50 lower in
the $51.00 to $51.50 range with
estimated slaughter today of
290,000 head. Steady to higher
midway product prices and ideas
that cash hogs Thursday would be
at least $ .50 higher offset the lower
openings.
