Brook Lawn Tops State In NCGA Contest LANCASTER Brook Lawn Farms won first place in the Pennsylvania, irrigated division of the 1986 National Corn Growers Association yield contest. Roy and James Erb earned the honor with DeKalb-Pfizer Genetics hybrid DK636, which yielded 128.33 bushels per acre. The Erbs planted the field on May 6, 1986, in 32-inch rows at a rate of 27,000 seeds per acre. The crop was harvested on Oct. 10, with a moisture content of 25.9 percent. The NCGA has sponsored the yield contest for nearly 30 years. This year’s 1,724 completed entries represented 51 seed companies and 215 hybrids. “The main thrust is to encourage development of new and improved management techniques and show the importance of using solid cultural practices in U.S. com production,” explains Larry Rus, Public Relations Director for NCGA. Trials were conducted last year on 70 varieties and advanced lines being developed by commercial seed companies and public institutions. A report on those results has now been published. Entries representing three maturity groups were compared with varieties currently being grown in the state. To see how varieties performed on different soil types, tests were conducted at four sites the university’s Research and Education Center near Georgetown, Murray Farms near Selbyville, Fifer Orchards at Woodside and the Kohl Farm near Middletown. Despite dry periods at all locations, yields were better than expected. The average for entries within each maturity group at each test site provides an indication of overall growing conditions at that location. Since rainfall and other factors varied greatly among test sites last summer, growers are advised to use caution when making yield comparisons bet ween locations or maturity groups. A table showing the three-year (1984-1966) average yields of 29 of these varieties is included in the report.
