University
Of Del.
Honors
Rosenherger
NEWARK, Del. - Dr.
John Rosenherger,
chairman of the
department of animal
science and agricultural
biochemistry at the
University of Delaware,
has been named the 1987
recipient of the George
M. Worrilow Award.
Presented annually
by the Agricultural
Alumni Association of
the College of
Agricultural Sciences,
the award recognizes
outstanding service to
agriculture by a
university graduate.
Rosenberger, who
was born in Wilmington,
holds a bachelor’s and
master’s degree from
the University of
Delaware. After
completing his doc
torate at the University
of Wisconsin in 1972, he
returned to the
University of Delaware
as an assistant
professor. He was
promoted to associate
professor in 1976 and to
full professor in 1981.
Author and co-author
of over 100 articles in
referred journals,
popular press
publications and
proceedings, Rosen
berger has established
an international
reputation as a
virologist and avian
disease researcher. He
has been invited to
make presentations at
10 international con
ferences.
In the early 1970 s
Rosenberger identified
a new poultry disease
syndrome caused by the
infectious bursal
disease virus (Gumboro
disease). Ten years
later when established
vaccines ceased to work
well against this
disease, he identified
new, variant strains of
the virus from which a
new vaccine was
produced in 1986.
In recognition of his
achievements in im
proving poultry health
and diagnostics, the
Delmarva Poultry
Industry presented
Rosenberger a medal of
achievement in 1976 and
the National Broiler
Council gave him a
distinguished research
award in 1982.
