PHILADELPHIA - Two men
who work closely and influenced
the DHIA on the state and national
level were honored Thursday night
at the close of the National Dairy
Herd Improvement Convention.
W. Charles McGinnis, former
president of the American Jersey
Cattle Club, received the H. Victor
Joachim Distinguished Leadership
and Service Award. Renamed in
honor of former NDHIA president
H. Victor Joachim.
A past president of the NDHIA,
McGinnis retired as a national
DHIA last year after serving the
maximum term of 10 years. The
50-year-old North Carolina native
has served the South Carolina
DHIA as a president for three
years, vice president for three
years, director for 14 years, and
executive committee member for
12 years.
In addition to the office of
president in the AJCC, McGinnis
served as vice president and on the
board of directors. He held the

McGinnis, Robinson Honored At
office of president in the South
Carolina Jersey Cattle Club.
McGinnis has been active in the
National Purebred Dairy Cattle
Association, American Dairy
Association, South Carolina PDCA,
South Carolina Dairy Association,
National Association of Farm
Managers, and South Carolina
Farm Bureau.
An active dairy cattle judge,
McGinnis purchased the White
Plains Ranch in Mountville, S.C.,
in 1979 and established a herd of
485 registered Jerseys.
Dean E. Robinson received the
Outstanding Service Award.
Former general manager of the
Virginia Federation of DHIA,
Robinson served the DHIA
program in Virginia for 31 years.
He began his career as a milk
tester for Grayson County in 1955.
In 1964 Robinson advanced to
fieldman and in 1969 became
general manager of the Virginia
Federation of DHIA.

keeping on the state level. He
helped establish a centralized milk
testing laboratory in Blacksburg,
Va., and in the first year had all the
herds enrolled in Virginia.
He was instrumental in the in
stallation of a FOM-SCC machine
in the lab, being the second state in
the country to recognize this need.

Regional Cooperative Marketing
Agency. This was followed by a
short discussion and slide series on
the “Dairy of Distinction”
program by Sue Reynolds from the
American Dairy Association.”
