    Hopkins Wins Delaware Holstein Service Award
SMYRNA, Del. - William
Hopkins, Lewes, received the
distinguished service award of the
Delaware Holstein Association at
the Association’s annual meeting
held recently at the Smyrna Fire
House.
Hopkins received the award
based on his many years of
significant service to the dairy
industry in the Delaware. He has
served as a member of the boards
of directors and delegate to In
ter-State Milk Producers, Dairy
Council Inc., and the Mid-Atlantic
Milk Marketing Association.
Together with his wife, Dorothy,
and 10 children, Hopkin manages
500 acres and 250 cows. The owner
of the third generation farm and
his wife have managed to put all 10
of their children through college.
Their son Walter recently com
pleted his term as president of the
state association.
Outstanding youth awards were
given to John Green, Middletown,
in the junior division, and Cheryl
Warren, Kenton, in the senior
division.
Mark Phipps, Wilmington,
garnered two production awards in
the junior division. His 2 year old,
Centerdel Mars Ideal, earned the
milk award with a 305 day
production of 19,317 pounds of milk
and 677 pounds of fat. His aged
cow, Centerdel Topper Elect D
Micky, won the fat award with a
305 day lactation of 23,146 pounds
of milk and 855 pounds of fat.
Breck Vanderwende, Green
wood, took home the award for
high 2-year-old fat production.

Will Phipps, Wilmington, was
the owner of two cows earning
three production awards. Cen
terdel Magic Con L Precious
completed a lactation of 19,416
pounds of milk and 713 pounds of
fat for the top position in the
3-year-old milk category. Cen
terdel Mars Riley O Orchid, a 4
year old, produced the high milk
and fat record of 23,229 pounds of
milk and 896 pounds of fat. This
cow won the award for overall fat
champion in the Junior division.
Martha Phipps reaped the
remaining production awards in
the junior division. Her 3 year old,
Aynestead ZsaZsa SWD Capri,
earned fat award with a production
of 18,580 pounds of milk and 869
pounds of fat. She won the overall
milk award and the aged cow milk
award with Centerdel Jupiter
RORA Nina. The 5 year old
produced a record of 24,061 pounds
of milk and 830 pounds of fat.
In the open division Norman
Voss, Clayton, captured the 2 year
old milk and fat awards. Sau-Au
Sherm Jenna produced 31,827
pounds of milk and 869 pounds of
fat. Voss added the 3 year old milk
award, 4 year old milk and overall
milk champion awards, and aged
cow fat award to his winnings.
Contributing to his successes
were: a 3 year old, Vossmon
Rotate Ellie, with a production of
30,378 pounds of milk and 1,023
pounds of fat; Vossmon Trump
Suzie, 4 year old, with 32,934
pounds of milk and 962 pounds of
fat; and Vossmon Elbow Star, a 7

award went to a cow owned by C.
Delbert Cain, Harrington.
Cain-View Valiant Rose produced
a record of 26,895 pounds of milk
and 1,129 pounds of fat.
J.E Bailey and Sons Inc. won the
4 year old fat award with Bal-Far
Crystal Wizard. She completed a
lactation of 25,923 pounds of milk
and 1,036 pounds of fat. Baileys
also earned the aged cow mUk
award. Their 6 year old produced a
record of 30,738 pounds of milk and
940 pounds of fat.
Treasurer Charmayne Busker
reported a break-even financial
year for the Association. The
Association will host the Eastern
Shore Calf Sale on March 14, the
state Holstein show this spring and
the state calf raffle at the State
Fair this summer.
Guest speaker Glenn Freese,
Oxford, Pa., told the group they
must alter the way they approach
the dairy business. They must look
at the business the way a banker
would not just as a way of life.
“Use what you have above your
shoulders a little more, and set
your goals on what the market
wants,” he said.
Phil Pierson and Norman Voss,
both of Clayton, welcomed the
group to their farms. Voss
maintains a BAA of 106 and a
rolling herd average of 21,641
pounds of milk and 742 pounds of
fat on 95 head. Pierson averages
18,651 pounds of milk and 697
pounds of fat with a BAA of 102 on
107 head.

Morris, Newark. Also elected
were: Charles Hudson, Viola, vice
president; Charmayne Busker,
Harrington, secretary-treasurer;
and directors James Wolfer,
Newark, Dan Vanderwende,
Bridegeville, and Robert
Voorhees Houston.
WYSOX New directors of the
Bradford County Forest Lan
downers’ Association were in
troduced during a recent meeting
in Wysox. The directors were
elected during the organization’s
annual meeting in November.
Directors Robert and Susan
Storch are from Troy. Susan,
elected as secretary at a recent
board of director’s meeting,
replaces Janice Schlegel, who
retired from the board.
Another new director is Tim
Beardslee, who farms in Wetona
with his father, Roy Beardslee.
Other directors are Ben Wilcox of
East Canton, Frank Crandall of
Sayre, Elton Pepper of Towanda,
Dr. James Smith, vice-president of
Monroeton, and Dan Puterbaugh,

are based on the number of milk
animals with a base rate of |lO for
the first 10 milking registered
animals and a 10 cent charge per
cow up to a maximum of |2O.

John Buzzell of Towanda, who
spoke about forestry in New
Zealand. He and his wife, Jane,
also treated members to a New
Zealand dessert called “pavlova”
containing kiwi fruit.
The next meeting will be held
March 17 at 7:30 p.ra. at the
Cooperative Extension office in
Towanda. Game Protector Bill
Bowers, from Troy, will speak
about “The Wonders of Nature.”
