Maryland Holstein Convention Slated For Feb, 20 To 21
FREDERICK The Maryland
state Holstein convention and sale
will be held on Feb. 20 and 21 at the
Carroll County Agricultural
Center, Westminster.
Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.
on Friday, Feb. 20. Jason Myers,
convention chairman, is scheduled
to open the convention at 10:30
a.m. Joseph Schwartzbeck,
president, will follow Myers to the
podium for the beginning of the
annual business meeting.
At the business portion of the
meeting the production awards
and PBR awards will be presented
by Clarence Stauffer, National
Holstein Association consultant.
The Juniors will discuss the
possibilities of forming a junior
Holstein club at 10:30 a.m.
Also beginning at 10:30 is the
Ladies activity, a house tour to the
homes of three active women in the
state association. Those attending
the tour will visit the homes of
Kathy Hoff, Nona Schwartzbeck
and Karen Hobson.
Lunch, by reservation only, will
be held from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. The
business meeting and junior
program lunch will cost $8 per
person.

Dairy Days
Slated
For Lycoming ,
Chester Counties
Extension agents in Lycoming
County and Chester County have
scheduled Dairy Day for their
respective counties.
Lycoming County
In Lycoming County Dairy Day
will be held at the Lycoming Mall
Community Room on Tuesday,
Feb. 10. Dr. Dick Adams, Penn
State dairy nutritionist, begins the
presentations at 10 a.m. with a
discussion of new concepts in
feeding dairy cows.
Dr. M.J. Popp, Lewisburg
veterinarian, will talk about how to
keep calves and heifers healthy.
Following noontime break,
Adams resumes the presentations
by talking on about how to fine tune
concentrate feeding for dairy
cows.
Lehan Power, extension farm
management specialist, will
discuss how to stay competitive in
the dairy business. The specialist
will also answer questions con
cerning over-order pricing.
No reservations are needed for
Lycoming’s Dairy Day.
Chester County
Scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 26
at the Sadsburyville Fireball,
Chester County’s Dairy Day begins
with a presentation by Dr. Micheal
O’Connor, Penn State extension
dairy specialist, on new
developments in reproductive
management.
Dr. Larry Jenkins, Penn State
extension farm management
specialist, follows with a
discussion on keys to a farmer’s
future in dairying. Dave Swartz,
Chester County extension agent,
rounds out the morning session by
talking on water quality for dairy
farms.
In the afternoon, O’Connor talks
about ways to increase profits with
herd reproductive records.
Jenkins concludes the program
with an explaination of the affects
of the 1986 tax reform act.
Reservation at $4 per person are
needed at the Chester County
extension office by Feb. 19. The
reservations should be sent to

Ronald Buffington, vice president
of HIO Inc., will discuss the topic
“Holsteins and Future Choices.”
The junior dairy bowl contest
begins at 3 p.m. Juniors ages 9 to 20
are invited to participate. The top
six individuals will compete this
spring for four spots to represent
Maryland at the National Holstein
Convention, June 21 to 24, in In
dianapolis. The contest will include
oral and written portions.
A complimentary social hour
with a cheese table, milk punch
and stronger spirits will begin at 6
p.m.
Toastmaster William Powel HI
open the banquet at 7 p.m. Marlin
Hoff will sing the Lord’s Prayer for
the invocation. The evening meal,
at a cost of $lO per person, will be a
turkey and oyster dinner with a
make your own sundae dessert
table.
Following remarks by Maryland
Dairy Princess Kaylena Martin at
8 p.m., the youth judging and dairy
bowl teams will be introduced.
Judy lager will present the
scholarship awards and Donna
Myers will present the junior
Holstein member awards. Ron
Buffington will conclude the
program with a musical slide
presentation entitled “God Bless.”
Entertainment for the evening
program begins at 9:30 p.m. with a
disc jockey providing music for the
group to dance to.
At 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21,
the annual convention sale begins.
The sale will showcase some of the
top genetics in the Mid-Atlantic
area.
A wall hanging, donated by Mrs.
Sidney Lease, will be auctioned
before the sale on Saturday. The
hanging was crafted and quilted by
Mrs. Lease. Proceeds from the
sale will be donated to the treasury
of the new junior Holstein club.
Hotel reservation are needed by
Feb. 10 for the convention and
should be made directly with the
Quality Inn, 451 WMC Drive,

hotel, specify attendance at the
Holstein convention to receive the
room rates of single, $39, and
double, $45.
Meal reservations must also be
made by Feb. 10. Checks should be
made payable to the Carroll
