Rabid Pet Raccoon Bites Woman Berks County
HARRISBURG - A State
Department of Agriculture official
has warned against keeping wild
animals as pets and cited a recent
rabies incident in Greene County
as evidence of the danger involved.
Dr. Max A. Vanßuskirk Jr.,
director of the Bureau of Animal
Industry, said a Greene County
woman is receiving rabies
treatment because her pet raccoon
bit her and was diagnosed rabid.
Her household cat, which was
not previously vaccinated, was
exposed to the raccoon and is
under a three-month quarantine to
be sure it is rabies free.
“The incident illustrates why
wild animals should not be kept,

vaccinated and why mandatory
vaccination will soon be law,” he
said.
Under a mandatory rabies
vaccination law signed by Gov.
Dick Thornburgh in December,
dogs and household cats over three
months of age must be inoculated
against rabies as of Feb. 13.
“The intent is to prevent a
serious outbreak of rabies in wild
animals from spilling over in
greater numbers into domestic
animals in the neighborhoods of
their owners,” he noted. Penn
sylvania had 583 confirmed rabies
cases last year. There were just 23
cases ten years ago.

The Berks County Executive
Board met Jan. S at the ag center.
County president Mary Fizz called
the meeting to order.
Highlights of the coming year
include: Berks Heim bingo, April 9
and Nov. 12; and spring rally at
Elizabethtown College, May 20.
Committees were selected for the
county convention on Oct. 3 at the
AG Center.
The group gave donations to the
Berks Heim and Hamburg Center.
Members are working on several
ideas for the county project this
year.
The next meeting will be held
March 2 at the 4-H Center.
