Guernsey Show Ribbons HARRISBURG Guernsey breeders from York, Lancaster and Lebanon Counties shared top honors at Tuesday’s Guernsey show in the large arena of the Farm Show. Judge Charles McGinnis of Mountville, S.C., pulled Rutter Bros Jupiters June into the grand champion slot. Owned by Rutter Brothers of York and shown by Cindy Rutter-Johnson, the 4-year old cow was sired by Lone Palm TH Jupiter. June freshened on Jan. 1 with a bull calf. She was a candidate to come to last year’s Farm Show but didn’t calve out soon enough and was out of condition. “We brought her back earlier last year so she’d been in condition this year,” Cindy explained. The formula worked as June also captured the champion udder award. Last year the homebred champion completed a record in 275 days of 13,000 pounds of milk with a 5.4 test. Standing next to the champion in the reserve position was Lebanon Valley Star Elsie. Owned by Robert Smith of Annville, the 3- year-old champion has been shown since she was a calf. At last year’s Farm Show she placed second in the 2-year-old class ' for her previous best placing, Dave Smith said. Elsie’s other credits include an EX-91 classification and the Pennsylvania Guernsey Futurity title. As a 2-year-old she completed a record of 14,800 pounds of milk and 700 pounds of fat. Lebanon Valley Guernseys captured the premier breeder and exhibitor plaques for the second consecutive year and third time total. “We’re always pleased when we do well; Benedicts and Rutters had two good strings,” Dave ex plained. The Smiths had a total of nine animals at the Show with their prefix. Two of these animals belonged to their herdsman’s son, Thomas Hostetter Jr. Thomas earned the reserve junior and reserve grand championships of the youth show. Grand champion honors of the Victory Acres Returns BY J. EVAN REIFF HARRISBURG - It was the championship that almost wasn’t for Dean and Brenda Daubert. According to Dean, it took some are twisting from his sister, a student at Harrisburg Area Community College, before he decided to enter the Brown Swiss competition at the Pennsylvania Farm Show. The trip proved to be worthwhile for the Dauberts of Bemville, Berks County, as Windmill Mat Victoria was named the senior and grand champion cow of the Brown Swiss competition by judge John Morris. A 3-year-old, Victoria won the same title at last year’s Show. A senior yearling heifer, Willows Fayette Toshya is due in March to Agni. The placing surprised Janice since milking cows normally do better than heifers in the grand championship contest. Janice noted she is hoping for a heifer from the Fayette daughter since all of her other 4-H projects seem to have bull calves. She also stated she hopes the champion develops a good udder so she can continue showing her. “She did so well in the past for me and she leads so weU I’d like to continue showing her,” Janice said. On last year’s show circuit, Toshya placed third out of 18 in the national junior Jersey show and ninth out of 33 in the open show in addition to earning junior champion status at throughout the 4-H circuit, Janice explained.
