Lancaster Youth Cops Holstein Championship
HARRISBURG - A long
standing rivalry between two
youthful competitors and their
cows was renewed on Tuesday on
familiar territory. When the dust
settled in the large arena of the
Farm Show building, Thomas
McCauley emerged victorious and
unscathed; Queen Star Sexy had
conquered yet another challenger
and added a new ribbon to her
halter.
C.E. Hubbard returned to York
County with the reserve grand
champion title to await another
show.
Queen Star Sexy, EX-93, added a
new title to her long list of
showring accomplishments.
Although she garnered the youth
division championship of the Farm
Show two years ago, the open show
title had proved elusive until
Tuesday’s Holstein show.
Thomas never assumed the
championship was his despite
Sexy’s outstanding record. "I was
worried about C.E. His cow is fresh
and mine is just about dry,”
Thomas explained.
Judge Creedin Cornman,
Carlisle, gave the edge to Sexy
based on her length, scale, size and
overall frame. However, C.E.
Hubbard’s reserve grand cham
pion, earned best udder honors in
the aged cow class where she
placed second to Sexy.
In her most recent record, the
Sexation daughter produced over
31,000 pounds of milk and 1,358
pounds of fat. Thomas’ father, Dr.
Alan McCauley, Elizabethtown,
explained that Sexy had her last
calf in October, 1985. Since then
Thomas has been flushing her and
has an overseas contract for
embryos.
Thomas, a member of the
Lancaster County 4-H dairy club,
noted that it has been 10 years
since a showman from Lancaster
County garnered the Holstein show
grand championship at the Farm
Show.
Reserve grand champion,
Kowraygan Creek Linnan-Jean,
owned by C.E. Hubbard of York
County, freshened in September.
In her most recent record she
produced 23,460 pounds of milk and
1,090 pounds of fat in 365 days.
C.E., a nine-year 4-H member,
noted Linnan’s freshening date
was optimal for the Farm Show.

Another 4-H member was the
driving force behind Miller and
Guest of Nazareth winning the
premier breeder and exhibitor
award.
Kenneth Miller credits his
daughter, Patricia, with helping
the family their first premier
plaques. “Patty really wanted to
do it.” Kenneth explained that he
originally showed at the Farm
Show in 1955 but stopped showing
for awhile then Patty became
involved with the Northampton
County 4-H Dairy Club.
“My wife, Carol, wanted a
chance at the awards so we
brought eight this year. Last year
we only showed seven,” Kenneth
said, noting the premier awards
are based on the performance of
eight animals.
Carol commented through tears
of joy, “This makes the work
worthwhile.”
Miller and his brother-in-law, C.
Herbert Guest, operate a jugging
operation, M Maple Grove Farm,
of 165 homebred milking cows in
Nazareth. They maintain an
average of 17,800 pounds of milk on
their herd.
The Miller’s also showed the first
place exhibitor’s herd of four
animals. Patty owned three of the
four, Kenneth explained.
Sherry Donmoyer, Annville,
exhibited the junior champion for
the open and youth contests.
Swampy-Hollow Rick sired the
powerful Loving-Meadows Velvet,
a senior yearling.
Reserve junior champion' of the
open show went to an entry owned
by Robert Gitt and Chris and Steve
Wood, Littlestown, of Penn Gate
Farm.
Penn Gate Farm won the
champion udder class with its 2-
year-old entry, Penn Gate R Maple
