The animal redeemed herself, though, by giving birth to the gilt that took this year’s top honor. Thomas, who runs the family hog business with her husband Charles, needed only three years of Farm Show com petition to register her first vie- a cut above... the best! 1“ RIVETED SICKLE ASSEMBLIES • Readily Available • Complete Assembly • High Quality • Low Cost - Up to 50% savings ■■ Fit virtually all field equipment (OEM certified) SAFEMARK SAFEMARK THE SAFEMARK MARGIN QUALITY • SERVICE • DEPENDABILITY • ECONOMY tory. Gardner, 18, won with a gilt sired by a boar he bought from Indiana breeders Robert and Gary Wilson. Reserve Poland China honors went to Lehigh County when New Tripoli breeder Harlui Wessner won the second-place title with a gilt that had also taken reserve at KILE in October. The victory marked the end of a long dry spell for Wessner, who had topped the show for three years in a row beginning in 1977. His gilt was sired by TA Tudor, a boar purchased from Ohio. The reserve Spot title went to Lehigh County’s Lazarus Brothers. A competitive family of swine producers, the brothers, including Grant, Les, Gary, Wayne and Lynn, were named premier breeders in all four breeds of swine shown at last year’s New York State Fair. Yorkshire The other half of Arnold Hog Farms, Leon Arnold, followed his brother Larry’s Duroc win by taking champion honors in the Yorkshire show. The Lebanon breeder, who’s been a gilt show competitor since 1950, has often topped the gilt sale, but noted that this was Ms first championship show title. “ I’m pretty happy about about that,” he said. Arnold singled out his top gilt from 70 other potential Yorkshire show candidates on the home farm. “I had my eye on her a long time,” he pointed out. “She has two sisters, and one of them’s Just as good as she is.” Once again, the Lazarus family wasn’t far behind, with Calvin Lazarus and Sons going home with the reserve Yorkshire title. Grant Lazarus noted that the Lazarus farm has taken the champion York title three times and reserve twice. The sire of this year’s reserve gilt produced many on-foot and on-rail champions for the family, Lazarus said. ■rad GNt Show Chrator White Mar.
