Alfalfa IPM Programs
NEWARK, Del. - University of
Delaware extension personnel will
again be conducting field com and
alfalfa integrated pest
management (IPM) programs for
Delaware farmers during the 1987
growing season. These programs
are designed to help growers
become more efficient in their pest
control practices, make timely
pest control decisions and
maximize profits.
Since alfalfa producers face a
wide range of crop pests and
cultural problems, the IPM
program for this crop will deal
with the major aspects of
production. Weekly scouting for
insect, weed, disease and cultural
problems will start m April and
continue through September. At
appropriate tunes during the
growing season, participating
farmers will also receive m-
formation on plant population
counts, timing of fertilizer ap
plications and cutting schedules.
Participants will be asked to pay
$3 an acre to offset program costs.
The field corn IPM program will
be offered for the last time in 1987.
Beginning at plant emergence,
participating fields will be visited
once a week until pollination has
occurred. A preseason soil insect
sample will be taken in late March
to determine the need for a soil
insecticide treatment
Early season plant stand counts
and weed scouting reports will be
used to help growers determine if
cornfields should be replanted or
receive a postemergence herbicide
treatment. Over the growing
season, weekly reports on insects,
disease and insect activity will be
used to make pest management
decisions In August a final weed
map of each field will be drawn up
as a record of the abundance and
location of perennial and annual
weeds
Growers wishing to participate
in the extension field com IPM
program will be asked to o-«v S' 7
