Such a tree has other uses, too. As an indoor decoration is only one. We often take the tree and tie it to a post, such as a clothesline post. The tree becomes a small bird sanctuary. Or, cut off the boughs and place these over perennial flowers. The dense needles serve as a temporary mulch. Fir branches and pines will retain most of their needles until spring at which time the boughs can be removed If you live in a com munity where a shredder machine is available, the tree is ground up into a very satisfactory wood mulch to be used as needed.
