    UNIVERSITY PARK - Mary
Grim, president of the Penn
sylvania Council of Cooperative
Extension Associations, was
elected secretary of a national
voluntary citizens group at the
group’s national meeting held
earlier this month in Phoenix,
Arizona.
The organization, called the
Council for Agricultural Research,
Extension and Teaching
(CARET), is dedicated to the
continuation and enhancement of
agricultural research, extension
and teaching programs of the land
grant university system. CARET
provides a national forum for
support of agricultural programs
that are based in land grant
universities such as Penn State.
CARET is composed of
representatives from each state
and Puerto Rico. The delegates are
chosen by their respective
universities to be representatives
of their state’s agriculture
research and extension programs.
The organization was
established in 1982 by the Division
of Agriculture of the National
Association of State Universities

MANHATTAN, Kans. - The
recently publicized “greenhouse
effect” may not be all bad, say
some scientists at Kansas State
University. They’ve found that
increasing amounts of carbon
dioxide - a .major contributor to
the warming of the earth’s at
mosphere - also is a “windfall” to
winter wheat.
After two years of experiments,
increased carbon dioxide helped
wheat production. Also, plants in
the experimental plots did not
require additional water but
seemed to conserve it as the
amount of the carbon dioxide in
creased.

‘Greenhouse Effect 9 May Boost Wheat Yields
K-State agronomist, plants in the
experiment produced more grain,
grew bigger leaves, sent their
roots deeper, and used water more
efficiently as the amount of gas
increased.
The research team grew winter
wheat in plexiglas-covered
chambers placed over large pots of
soil called “rhizotrons.” Root
growth to a depth of five feet could
be observed through a glass plate
on one side of the rhizotron.
The chambers were infused with
various levels of carbon dioxide
throughout the growing season.
Hard red winter wheat either
received adequate water or was
drought stressed.

All yield components, including
protein and root weight, increased
with an increasing amount of
carbon dioxide, regardless of the
amount of water involved. Grain
yield increased by 60 percent for
well watered plants getting the
highest carbon dioxide con
centrations; the yield increased by
55 percent at the highest gas levels
even when the plant received less
water, Chaudhuri said.
He explained that an enriched
carbon dioxide environment in
creased yield for drought-stressed
plants, and that less water was
actually required to produce one
gram of grain if gas level was
increased.
