Study Monitors Lawn Runoff
UNIVERSITY PARK - Penn
State’s Landscape Management

Center has received a federal
matching grant award of $290,000
from the U.S. Geological Survey.
The grant, designated for research
on whether nutrient and pesticide
runoff from home lawns affects
water quality, covers the two-year
period from September 1986 to
August 1988.
Thomas Watschke, professor of
turfgrass science and director of
the Center, will coordinate the
research, which involves the

The research project is the first
to document amounts of runoff
from lawns. “Based on our
preliminary studies, we feel
nutrient and pesticide runoff from
home lawns may not threaten
water quality as much as some
have previously believed,” says
Dr. Watschke. “People are
justifiably concerned about water
supplies, and our research will
monitor the effect of lawn fer
tilizers and pesticides on the
quality of one of our nation’s most
important natural resources. ”
