A2B-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November IS, 1986 QUARRYVILLE - Lancaster County Guernsey Breeders learned which cows topped their respective classes and which herds recorded meritorious production at their annual meeting held Thursday night. The brother and sister team of Axel and Millie Linde, Oxford, received recognition for the high herd average for milk and protein. On 45 cows their herd averaged 15,172 pounds of milk, 715 pounds of fat for a 4.7 test and 538 pounds of protein for a 3.5 test. Willows Farm, owned by Ken neth and Thelma Garber of Willow Street, kept the Lindes from taking the high herd average for fat by 10 pounds. Their herd averaged 15,120 pounds of milk, 725 pounds of fat and 519 pounds of protein on 60 head. The high lifetime production award went to a 12-year-old cow owned by Peter Witmer. His cow’s credits include 157,428 pounds of milk and 7,587 pounds of fat. Janice Garber’s 2-year-old cow earned the high 2 year old milk and fat honor with a production of 16,873 pounds of milk and 850 pounds of fat for a 5.0 test. In the 3-year-old milk category, “Attendance at the Penn sylvania Farmer’s Association annual meeting should be top priority for every member of the Chester/Delaware farmer’s Association”, Dick Breckbill, Vice president, Oxford, told fellow Directors at their monthly meeting in West Chester last week. The PFA meeting is being held in Hershey, Nov. 17-19. “State policy proposals have been received from every county in Pennsylania”, Breckbill said. “These will be accepted or rejected by voting delegates from each County. Those proposals accepted will become state policy. Policies adopted that have national impact, will be forwarded to the American Farm Bureau Federation for acceptance or rejection as national policy at the national meeting in February”. Breckbill served on the State Committee that prepared the policies for presentation to the delegates. The 3-year-old fat award went to a cow owned by Jay Garber and with a production of 18,217 pounds of milk and 881 pounds of fat. Kenneth and Thelma Garber’s 4- year-old cow’s production was high enough at 19,746 pounds of milk and 1,069 pounds of fat to earned the high milk and fat distinction for her age. The Garbers also owned the high milk age cow. Their bovine produced 21,387 pounds of milk and 947 pounds of fat. This cow was edged out of the dual title by a stablemate who produced 18,660 pounds of milk and 988 pounds of fat. This year the club elected two new directors as opposed to the traditional three; the membership plans to pare the total number of directors from nine to six. Elected to three-year terms were Donald Brenneman and Gerald Harnish. Millie Linde presented a slide presentation on her recent trip to Australia for the Fifth World Guernsey Conference. Chester/Delaware Farmer’s Assoc. Report Chairman, West Grove, reported that 472 membership renewals with 6 new members have been received to date. “All renewals received before Nov. 17 will be eligible for a drawing for a trip to Disneyland. Any member signing up three new members by Nov. 17 will be eligible for a separate drawing for a trip to Dispeyland,” Bartels said. Harold Bryson, Oxford, Chairman of the Education Committee, gave a progress report on a scholarship for students whose future will be in agriculture. Stanley Guest, Pottstown, Chairman of the Farm-City Day (November 22) listed the farms that would be open for visits. He listed Mildred Seeds, dairy; Yeatman’s, mushrooms; John Hicks, beef; Edward Watson, goats; Highland Orchards, fruit; and Thorncroft, riding stable. Guest expressed appreciation to his committee members for making arrangements for the visits and publicity.
