AIS-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 15,1986 Suffel, Wenger Show Cumberland County 4-H Beef, Lamb Winners BY KATHY GILL Special to Lancaster Farming CARLISLE - Amid the cold, grey drizzle that marks a winter day, 46 4-H students sludged through mud and rain to par ticipate in the annual Cumberland County 4-H Beef and Lamb Roundup and Sale Nov. 11 at the Carlisle Livestock Market. Stacy Suffel, Carlisle, showed the grand champion steer, and Susan Wenger, Mechanicsburg, showed the champion market lamb. Western Sizzlin’ Steak House, Carlisle, purchased Suffers 1,250-pound steer for |1.29 per pound. Farmer’s Trust Co., Carlisle, purchased Wenger’s 125- pound lamb for $1.55 per pound. Both prices reflected depressed market conditions; 1985 prices were $1.51 and $2.80 per pound, respectively. The 1,280-pound reserve champion steer, shown by Sandy Hopple, was purchased by CCN6 for $1.20 per pound. Troy Waggoner’s 125-pound reserve champion lamb sold for $1.55 per pound to Fred Pottinger. Bobbi Jo Keiter exhibited the champion pair or market lambs, totalling 245 pounds, which sold for $1.30 per pound to Wenger’s Beef Farm of Carlisle. Eric Berkheimer took county champion lamb honors, and S. Wenger took reserve county lamb champion honors. Showmanship winners in the lamb competition follow; junior champion showman, Jessica Wenger; intermediate champion showman, Waggoner; and senior champion showman, Vickie Holtry. Ken Winebark, Lebanon County Extension agent, judged the day long event. Trophies were donated by the Carlisle Livestock Market, the Mechanicsburg Chamber of Commerce, Dennin Optiks and Mr. and Mrs. John Holtry. Agway of Carlisle and Locust Point Quarries donated the sale banners. Ribbons were donated by Sunray Suffolks and Gladview Dorsets, Ray and Robert Holtry and Nace’s Farm Equipment Sales. The annual event is sponsored by the Cumberland County 4-H Beef and Sheep Club. Leaders of the two groups follow: beef club, William Otto, Ronald Swank, Michael Berkheimer and Donald Nailor; lamb club, Robert Holtry, Credon Bixler and Diane Conaway. Other buyers included Souder’s Feed and Grain, the Country Foul weather didn’t stop these Cumberland County 4-H'ers from showing their steers at the county's annual roundup.
