It costs the average U.S. farmer
about $3OO to grow an acre of corn.
It takes 100 bushels an acre
produced at $3 per bushel market
price just to break even. Cash
grain prices in Delaware are
currently running between $1.75 to
$1.85 per bushel or less. This
means cash grain producers not
eligible for price protection af
forded by the government farm
program will fall far short of
covering production costs.
“In Delaware, the problem is
further compounded by the fact
that we’ve had a fairly severe
drought,” the marketing specialist
says. State average yields for com
as of September 1 were estimated
at 75 bushels per acre. The range in
yield throughout the state varies
from less than 20 bushels per acre
to just over 100.
“It doesn’t appear that surplus
stocks are going to go away any
time soon,” concludes German.
“This means com prices are likely
to remain depressed for next
year’s crop. With this fact in mind,
farmers not already planning to do
so should seriously consider,
among other things, participating
in the 1987 farm program to make
ends meet.”
