MANHEIM Mount Joy’s Ellen
Lewis showed no mercy at last
Saturday’s Lancaster County 4-H
Woolies Roundup, winning every
division she entered. The daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. George Lewis,
Ellen took top honors in the
breeding sheep show, both
champion and reserve titles in the
market lamb show and first place
in the showsmanship contest’s
senior division.
In the breeding sheep show,
Ellen repeated last year’s roundup
performance, topping the Hamp
shire show, then going on to win the
supreme champion title over all
five breeds shown. The victory was
particularly sweet, since her
winning ewe lamb was homebred.
The lamb was also reserve
supreme champion at the
Manheim Fair last month and
Ellen has high hopes for her at the
upcoming State Farm Show.
Corn Growers Protest
Canadian Duty Ruling
ST. LOUIS, Mo. The National
Com Growers Association (NCGA)
intends to pursue every available
recourse to reverse or terminate
the November 7 preliminary
determination handed down by
Revenue Canada that U.S. corn
exports to Canada are allegedly
subsidized on an illegal basis.
The case now goes to the
Canadian Import Tribunal which
will conduct an inquiry and make a
final ruling within 120 days.
As a result of the preliminary
ruling all U.S. com exports en
tering Canada will be subject to a
duty of $1,048 per bushel (U.S.
funds) immediately. If the
Canadian Import Tribunal’s final
ruling is the same as the
preliminary determination, the
duty becomes a permanent one.

Lewis Wins Flock Of Awards At 4-H Woolies Roundup
In the market lamb show, the 17-
year-old 4-H’er took both champion
and reserve titles with a pair of
purebred Hampshires bred by
Charlie Kirlin of Illinois. Her
champion weighed 124 pounds, and
the reserve tipped the scales at 134
pounds.
“This was definitely the best
roundup I ever had,” she summed
up. Lewis hopes to continue her
winning streak tomorrow when she
goes up against stiff competition in
the leadline show at the North
American International Livestock
Expo in Louisville, Kentucky.
Show judge Tim Hall, a Suffolk
breeder from Dalmatia, also
qualified a Lewis market lamb

derstanding of U.S. farm

Canadian and other international
trade,” says NCGA President
Harold Cutler, Greenville, NC.
“U.S. corn exports to Canada
have declined by 78 percent be
tween 1980 and 1985, while
Canadian corn exports to the U.S.
have risen substantially in 1986,”
adds Cutler. “When you combine
these facts, there is no evidence
that U.S. farm programs have

NCGA is urging all industries

the U.S. and Canada to join in
voicing objections to appropriate
government officials in both
countries prior to the Canadian
Import Tribunal’s final deter
mination in March 1987.
